Mission Viejo, California, is coming together to honor the life of an incredible man, Kem Lawyer, who passed away peacefully on December 18, 2024, at the age of 74. His loving wife stood by his side, providing comfort in his final moments. Kem’s life was a tapestry woven with adventure, commitment, and love for his family, friends, and sports. Born on July 31, 1950, in Los Angeles, California, to Ray and Joann Lawyer, he spent his early years in Fullerton, where he carved out an impressive journey.
A Life Rich in Sports and Passion
Kem was not just an athlete; he was a force of nature! Growing up in Fullerton, he attended Acacia Elementary School and Ladera Vista Junior High School before finishing his education at Troy High School in 1968. There, his football skills shone brightly, earning him All-League defense honors. After high school, he played as an offensive tackle at Fullerton Junior College and later transferrred to UC Berkeley. It was during his time at Berkeley that he discovered his true passion for rugby, which he embraced wholeheartedly starting in 1970.
His love for rugby took him far and wide as he joined the Newport Beach Rugby Club and even garnered a place on the California All-Stars, showcasing just how talented he was! From exciting tournaments in San Diego and Monterey to competing in the prestigious Aspen Ruggerfest in Colorado, Kem thrived on every moment spent on the field.
Professional Ventures and Adventures
In March 1973, Kem signed on as a free agent with the NFL Denver Broncos, opening up a new chapter in his sports career as a defensive lineman. He went on to play with the Hawaiians in the World Football League and later joined the Southern Calif Rhinos in the Semi-Pro California Football League. An adventurous spirit, Kem even journeyed to Clermont-Ferrand in France for an opportunity to play rugby abroad in 1978.
As if that wasn’t enough, Kem loved all things adventurous. From body surfing to cycling, he embraced the thrill of life. Notably, he completed a dangerous 84-mile bike ride around Lake Tahoe in 1984, proving he was as tough as nails. His connection with the ocean was profound, and he wasn’t afraid to tackle the waves at Pipeline in Oahu at the remarkable age of 36.
A Passion for Coaching
But Kem’s legacy extends far beyond just playing sports. He dedicated years to coaching high school football, where he was known for his deep connection with his players. Serving as the Varsity defensive line coach at Capistrano Valley High School from 1986 to 1999 and later as the Varsity offensive line coach at San Clemente High School from 2000 to 2010, he influenced countless young athletes, sharing vital life lessons along with his extensive knowledge of the game.
Family and Career
Kem’s personal life was equally fulfilling. He married Holly Bartholomew in 1983, and together they made Mission Viejo their home. They shared a love for travel and adventure, creating countless treasured memories together. Kem also enjoyed a successful 34-year career in the airline industry, starting with Air California in 1978, which later transitioned to American Airlines after the acquisition of AirCal in 1987. On top of all his achievements, Kem was immensely proud of his Chickasaw Nation heritage from his mother’s side.
A Celebration of a Remarkable Life
Kem is survived by his beloved wife Holly, his daughter Andrea from his first marriage, and a growing family that includes two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also dear to his heart were his sister-in-law, Jody, and his late brother Kurt. His charm, humor, and uplifting spirit touched the lives of many, reminding us all to embrace life’s adventures.
A Celebration of Life gathering is planned for April 25, 2025, at Doheny State Beach Park in Dana Point, California.
