Remembering a Life of Aloha: Albert John Ka’aumoana Perkins III

In the serene community of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, residents recently gathered to reflect on the beautiful life of Albert John Ka’aumoana Perkins III, who passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, at the age of 82. Surrounded by the warmth and love of his family, he left behind a legacy deeply rooted in aloha and a commitment to ʻohana (family).

A Journey Through Life

Albert was born on January 19, 1943, and was affectionately known as “Big Al” to those who loved him. He grew up in the vibrant culture of Honolulu, where the spirit of aloha filled the air, shaping the man he would become. His life story is one of hard work, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.

Family First

One of Albert’s proudest achievements was his 50-year marriage to Hattie Rachel Nahonoapi’ilani Perkins (Bright). Together, they established a loving home in Kaneʻohe, where they raised three sons: Albert John Ka’aumoana Perkins IV, Elton John Keolaokalani Perkins, and Trapper John Ikaika Perkins. Albert instilled in his boys the values of hard work, humility, and a profound sense of pride in their Hawaiian heritage.

Courage and Commitment

During a turbulent time in history, Albert served his country as he was drafted into the U.S. Army, taking on the challenges of the Vietnam War with courage and honor. After returning to civilian life, he dedicated himself to his career as a truck driver for Better Brands on Oʻahu, where he worked tirelessly to provide for his family.

A Father’s Love

Albert made sacrifices to ensure that his sons had the opportunity to attend private school, enabling them to pursue dreams that he wished he could have chased himself. He was always there for his family, cherishing the moments spent together. Whether it was engaging in light-hearted conversations, laughing until their stomachs hurt, or sitting down for a friendly game of cards, Albert understood the essence of family time.

Forever Remembered

In addition to his beloved children, Albert is survived by his wife, Hattie, his brother Levi Michael Perkins, Jr., and a number of cherished grandchildren including Isis Perkins, Aura Perkins, Albert Perkins V, Lincoln Perkins, Bennett Perkins, Kealiʻi Kauahi, and Sasha Vargas. Albert’s big heart was ever-present, and he shared it with his family, showing them the importance of patience, humor, and above all, love.

A Celebration of Life

As families and friends prepare to say their goodbyes, a memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, from 3:00–5:00 PM. This gathering will take place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center located at 27976 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo, CA 92692.

Albert John Ka’aumoana Perkins III may no longer be with us, but his spirit shines brightly through the lives he touched and the lessons he imparted. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations with the values that defined him—a life full of aloha, unwavering dedication, and a commitment to family.
